Born on 17 July 1923, Dr. Ram Mohan Lal Mehrotra was a visionary in the realm of pathology whose brilliance and compassionate spirit left an indelible mark on independent India. Early Life and Academic Excellence

Hailing from Kalpi, Dr. Mehrotra distinguished himself from an early age, excelling in his school and college years. His remarkable academic prowess earned him a coveted place at the prestigious King George’s Medical College, Lucknow—then the finest medical institute in North India. Graduating as the top of his class and receiving the Hewitt Medallist, he went on to earn his M.D. in Pathology in 1948. His relentless pursuit of knowledge led him to London University, where he secured a Ph.D. with distinction in experimental pathology.

A Transformative Journey in Pathology

Dr. Mehrotra’s career at King George’s Medical College was nothing short of transformative. Beginning as a lecturer in the Department of Pathology, he soon became renowned as an exceptional teacher, diagnostician, and researcher. Over an illustrious 18-year tenure as the department head, he expanded specialized services and elevated the department’s reputation to national prominence. His visionary leadership not only advanced the field of oncopathology but also set new benchmarks for excellence in diagnostic medicine.

National Leadership and Esteemed Recognitions

Dr. Mehrotra’s impact extended well beyond his academic and clinical achievements. As President of the Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists (1977–78), he was instrumental in establishing regional chapters, fostering a culture of excellence and collaboration across India. His exemplary contributions to medicine were honored with several prestigious awards, including the highly esteemed B.C. Roy Award, a testament to his lasting influence on the medical community.
